Touring: France, Sri Lanka & Spain

From the eighth century, southern Spain was the province of the Moors. They arrived in 711 under the leadership of the Ummayad general, Tariq ibn Ziyad, and established a base in Cordoba. Later, under the Almohads (a Berber dynasty from the Maghreb), Seville became the capital and finally, in 1228, Ibn al Ahmar established the Nasrid dynasty at Granada. Ibn Battuta, the celebrated Maghribi traveller, visited Granada in the 14th century and was as charmed by the city as travellers are today. In 1492 the Emirate of Granada surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs and a number of Moslems escaped to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Known today as Las Alpujarras, this region was the last refuge of the Moors, who built picturesque villages here and continued to maintain a distinct culture for another 150 years.

Please note that this program is run through Active Travel, through whom all bookings will go.

We begin our journey in Madrid and the following day travel to Cordoba, once the most dazzling and populous city in the world, where Jews, Christians and Moslems happily co-existed. We visit the Great Mosque (Mesquita) and have a free day to explore the charming Juderia (Jewish Quarter). Travelling to Seville, on the banks of the River Guadalquivir, we visit the splendid Almohad Alcazar and the Cathedral, with its celebrated Giralda – with free time to explore the historic Barrio Santa Cruz district.

Granada is our next destination, where we visit the Cathedral and the Capilla Real – housing the mortal remains of Ferdinand and Isabella. We also spend a full day at the wonderful Alhambra and Generalife.

Our journey now changes pace, as we travel south into the Alpujarras region. We are based for five nights in a village house on the outskirts of Orgiva and from here we enjoy four invigorating day walks. We explore the pretty whitewashed villages of Capileira, Pampaneira and Bubion – all backdropped by the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada – walk through the gorge of Rio Trevelez, and spend a day hiking through the forests and moorland of the Cerro Redondo.

It is a stunningly beautiful region and at the end of the trip we are transferred back to Granada for onward flight connections.
